This post was inspired by a photo submission from one of our Previse clients, Meg.  Meg who lives in Sydney, Australia, has been Prevising for several months. Recently she  leapt into the realm of pure and organic cooking and discovered the wondrous benefits of Himalayan salt blocks.

Himalayan salt blocks are comprised of 100 percent pure salt.  The blocks have natural antibacterial properties, plus trace elements of 84 natural minerals.  Himalayan salt blocks can help promote stable pH balances, improved circulation, and balanced blood sugar.  Advocates also report improved respiratory function with continued use of the salt blocks.

So the question is, how do Himalayan salt blocks work, and where can I get mine?

Salt blocks work as food absorbs the salt and minerals during cooking, resulting in perfectly seasoned and healthier foods. Nearly anything that can be cooked in the oven, on the stovetop or grill, can be cooked on a salt block. Meg shared that her favorites are fresh vegetables, shellfish, thin slices of chicken beef, and individual pizza’s. The best part about cooking with Himalayan salt blocks is that cooking becomes an adventure for the whole family!

To prevent your Himalayan salt block from cracking or breaking, it is important to temper it each time before cooking.

How to temper your Himalayan salt block:

  • Place your salt block into a cold oven.
  • Heat your oven 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Leave your salt block in the oven for 10-5 minutes after your oven reaches temperature.
  • Remove the salt block and let it cool for 30 minutes.
  • Return the salt block to the oven, and set the temperature at 450 degrees.
  • Leave your salt block in the oven for 10-5 minutes after your oven reaches temperature.
  • Remove from oven and cook foods on the heated block.

Salt blocks are also an ideal use as a chilled serving platter. Place in the refrigerator or freezer overnight. The blocks will retain the chill for several hours and are a fun way to serve cheese and ice-cream!

Keep your salt block away from moisture and never fully immerse in water. To clean, simply scrub or brush with damp cloth, then air-dry for 12 – 24 hours. When your salt block is not being used on a regular basis, seal tightly and store in a cool, dry location.

How do you Previse?
